3A70.40 • Damped Oscillations: Rubber Band Chain
Location: Cabinet 4
Photo shows the demonstration used at the University of Texas at Austin.
Concepts Conveyed:
Shows a damped oscillation of differently lengthened rubber band chain bungees and a mass.
Instructions/ Notes:
- This demo can be performed with or without the stand. The longest bungee (pink) cannot be used on the stand, as it is too long when stretched to full length.
- Choose one of 3 rubber band chains and hang the 200g mass by its hook. The professor must drop the weight from the same height that they are holding the rubber band, or drop the weight at the same height of the stand included in the demo.
- Observe the damped oscillation as a result.
How to attach bungee to mass:
- Fold the rubber band chain in HALF at the colored tape.
- Hook the two bottom loops at the end of the chain to the hook on the 200g mass.
Demo Staff:
- Include a 200g mass (this can be found in Cabinet 4); any heavier masses might snap the rubber bands.
- Ask the professor if they would like to use a stand to operate this demo.
