Concepts Conveyed:
- Conservation of momentum to separate mixtures based on density.
- Gravity from rotational momentum used to separate mixtures.
- Centrifugal force generated from cranking an apparatus of several gears.
Instructions / Notes:
- Remove the acrylic sheet carefully. Insert three matching vials of some particulate into the vial holders at the base of the apparatus. Observe the mixed state of the vial’s contents.
- Remove the white keys (ring) from the vial keyhole (blue base) by lifting the white key UPWARDS. Place the vials into the vial holder with their caps facing inward.
- Place the acrylic sheet back into its original position and ensure that there are NO loose objects in the centrifuge chamber.
- Begin cranking the handle at the top of the demo slowly to distribute the lubricant around the gears. Gradually speed up and crank for up to 30 seconds.
- Slowly stop cranking, remove the acrylic sheet, and observe the separated contents inside of the vial.
Demo Staff:
- Make sure the demo is stored in a place where the crank handle does not get damaged.
- The inner gears of the apparatus MAY need lubrication (included with demo) if they are unable to spin smoothly.
- When demo is ordered, ensure that 4 vials of the same particulate are included: 3 to be spun inside the apparatus, and 1 to be saved as a control sample.
