6C10.20 • Diffraction Through a Single and Multi Slit
Location: Cabinet 6
Concepts Conveyed:
- single-slit diffraction: bending of light as it passes through a narrow slit; results in alternating pattern of bright/dark bands.
- Multi-slit diffraction: interference patterns - light passes through a number of slits greater than one; results in alternating pattern of bright/dark bands.
Left: "hex" pattern, single slit, red laser
Right: three slit, red laser
Left: "square" pattern, single slit, green laser
Right: three slit, green laser
Instructions/Notes:
- Two lasers are available: green laser (515 nm) or red laser (650 nm).
- Two diffraction slit wheels are available: single-slit, multi-slit.
- Turn the wheel to select the slit option you want!
Demo Staff:
- Place the laser on the metal bench.
- Place diffraction slit wheel in front of laser. Ensure laser travels through slit.
- Place white screen beyond diffraction slit wheel to see projected laser. Ensure image is visible.
