5B10.10 • Electric Field: Hair on End

Location: Cabinet 1

Instructions / Notes:

• Prior to the demonstration, remove sharp metal objects, such as keys, glasses, jewelry, etc.
• Stand on the insulated stool and place one hand on the metal sphere of the Van de Graaff generator.
• With the variable control turned clockwise, turn the power on.
• Quickly place the second hand on the sphere.
• Allow yourself to charge up. ( Fine, clean, unconditioned, dry hair stands out best.)
• Prior to shutting off the Van de Graaff generator, discharge the sphere with the wooden handle discharge sphere while maintaining one hand on the metal sphere of the Van de Graaff generator.
• To shut off the generator, use one hand to tap the metal discharge sphere against the Van de Graaff generator.
• With the other hand, turn off the variable motor control (the plastic knob).
